Lyme disease vaccine and dogs?
Should we give that vaccine to our dogs against that disease. I live in an urban area, but I found one tick on my dog yesterday, because in the weekends we go to the river with our dogs, and she probably caught it on the grass.
So I thought of lyme disease. My dogs have all their required vaccines, but my vet never mentioned lyme disease.
Do your dogs have that vaccine?
I use Advantage once a month for fleas and supposely ticks (?!!!)
Our hunting dog used to, but no longer does. The other three do not, never have.
While I do live in a high risk area, in the woods no less . . .I’ve discussed it with two different vets, one vet tech, my family, and my boss/breeder to come to the decision of not vaccinating for it. Whether you get your dog vaccinated for this or not is a personal choice, one I think has to be pondered on a whilst.
Why don’t I? It’s too chancy for me. There’s evidence of long term side effects that I don’t abide by. Many dogs, four or so weeks AFTER vaccination have exhibited classic Lymes disease symptoms while their tests for it comes back negative. There are many reports of BAD reactions to this vaccine. Severe reactions.
I don’t abide to putting my dogs through that for a CHANCE it will work. And while I’m full aware how horrible it is for a dog and their owner to go through this (been there, done that last year), I personally just can’t do it.
If you’re in an urban area and/or an area that’s not in the thick of it, don’t get them vaccinated. If your area is at high risk, you need to look at this vaccine and make the decision you’re comfortable with making. Talk to your vet, look it up, ect. Do what you think is best.
