Dog Has Constant Diarrhea
Constant Giardia in a Boston Terrier?
My boston in 7 months old and I got him 3.5 months ago. The first week I had him he had bloody diarrhea and had to take giardia meds. Since then he has gotten giardia each week he finishes his meds. The vet has upped the dosage each time and nothing seems to be working.
I am concerned my dog is very sick and that my reputable show breeder gave me a sick dog that should have been put down as a puppy.
Any ideas about what this could be?
He drinks filtered water and came from a real breeder, with references. The problem is that the minute he goes off his medicine his bloody, loose stool comes back.
Did they test for Giardia or guess? The meds that work best is Drontal, not the other stuff that vets recommend. Also, you must do alot to prevent re-infection. You have to bath the dogs paws and bottom after each bowel movement and pick up the waste and poor bleach on the ground where he went. The slightest bit of his waste (microscopic) could get on the dog and he will clean himself and get it again. You must retest the dog after exactly 10 days after taking the Drontal. I suggest a new vet that will treat with this. Uping the meds is making his intestines raw (may be where the blood is coming from). IT is damaging for the dog to be on meds so long and too strong. To help ease the stomach and intestines, I believe that a good dog food that has asodofolis (can’t spell it right) same thing that is in “real” yogurt (no sugar or flavorings, just plain). You can give this too but in small amounts. Yogurt is not something you would give any other time but helps the stomach. Please google search all this. You have a puppy and I know that Drontal is good for puppies (google Drontal in puppies) but not sure the yogurt will be okay. Get a good vet quick!!
